Mount Sentinel Secondary School (MSSS) is located in School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) and serves a rural community in British Columbia. The school supports a small but geographically dispersed student population, with some students commuting more than an hour each way to attend. Like many rural schools, MSSS faces systemic barriers to providing equitable access to arts education and electives. Students in this region have significantly fewer opportunities to engage with arts and culture compared to their peers in urban and suburban districts. Until 2008, Mount Sentinel Secondary School sustained a thriving band program built on decades of dedicated teaching, strong recruitment, and careful stewardship of resources. Despite serving a small community, the school benefited from a purpose-built band room and a well-maintained inventory of instruments—an exceptional asset for a rural school. Government budget cuts in 2008 resulted in the closure of the program, leaving the band room and its resources unused for nearly fifteen years. In 2023, MSSS hired Talon Nansel on a part-time contract, marking a turning point for music education at the school. Mr. Nansel brings extensive experience in secondary music education and has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the band program. Through his skill, enthusiasm, and student-centered approach, band at Mount Sentinel is once again positioned to thrive—provided it has the resources needed to sustain growth. During the 2023–24 school year, Mr. Nansel launched an after-school concert band that quickly gained traction among older students. Building on this success, the 2024–25 school year saw the introduction of a beginning band program for Grades 7 and 8. Enrollment has exceeded expectations, with 94 students currently participating. Demand has fully exhausted the school’s existing instrument inventory, requiring the purchase of 20 additional instruments to ensure equitable access for all interested students. As the program has matured, the after-school Concert Band evolved into the “Stage Band,” a jazz-focused ensemble designed as a primer for students with more than one year of playing experience. In the 2025–26 school year, scheduling improvements enabled the school to offer band instruction at multiple skill levels during the school day: two sections of Beginning Band (Grade 7), two sections of Intermediate Band (Grade 8), and the Stage Band integrated into the timetable and open to students in Grades 9–12. This shift was driven by a commitment to equity, ensuring that advanced music opportunities are accessible to all students, not only those able to participate after school. Program Priorities and Need To support the continued growth and long-term sustainability of the band program, the following priorities have been identified: Acquisition of contemporary musical literature by diverse, living composers. Expanding repertoire to include diverse voices enriches students’ musical understanding, broadens learning pathways, and ensures that students from all backgrounds see themselves reflected in the curriculum. Development of the percussion instrument inventory. The current percussion resources are insufficient to support diverse repertoire or meet student interest. Strengthening this area will increase student engagement, improve ensemble balance, and allow for broader participation and success. Continued expansion of the instrument inventory and instructional resources. Adequate and varied instruments ensure students can learn on their preferred instruments and allow ensembles to grow in both size and musical quality. Talon Nansel is an exceptional steward for the reinvigoration of band at Mount Sentinel Secondary School. He joined the school with strong recommendations from former colleagues and consistently receives enthusiastic feedback from students. Mr. Nansel is a skilled, caring, and inclusive educator who understands diverse learning styles and life experiences. He fosters meaningful connections with students and creates learning environments where all students are both challenged and supported. His passion for music is evident and contagious. In addition to his work at MSSS, Mr. Nansel’s outreach in local elementary schools has helped plant the seeds for future participation, strengthening the long-term sustainability of the program.
